On May 17, 1642, Ville-Marie ( Montreal ) was founded on the southern shore of Montreal island. Montreal is the city in the Canadian province of Quebec. Originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary", it is named after Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city.
